Union Township NJ Homes: More House for Your Money Near NYC
Weighing Union against nearby towns? See how it stacks up on price, schools, and commute → Find Your Town
Priced out of the inner-ring towns but not ready to give up on space? Union Township is where a lot of my value-focused buyers land. Just over the Essex line in Union County, it offers more house and more yard for the money than almost anywhere on my list — in an established, diverse community with everyday convenience built in.
🏡 Why buyers love Union
✅ More house for your money. The most affordable town I track — your budget stretches into a real single-family home with a yard that the pricier towns can't touch.
✅ Everyday convenience. The Route 22 corridor puts just about every shopping and dining destination minutes away, and Kean University adds a college-town energy.
✅ Established and diverse. A settled, welcoming community with a mix of housing styles and a strong sense of neighborhood.
✅ Commuter access. Rail and bus options toward New York, with an easy reach to Newark and the wider transit network.
🚉 The commute
Union sits on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line — most commuters ride to Newark and connect to a Midtown Direct train or PATH into the city, and there are express bus options too. It's a transfer rather than a one-seat ride, so I'll be straight with you about the trade-off — but for the price difference, a lot of buyers find it well worth it.
